In the midst of the historic center of Potsdam and at the junction of two arms of the Havel River lies “Freundschaftsinsel”, the Island of Friendship. Today, the island is one of the most popular parks within the heritage landscape of Potsdam.
The new entrance area of the park, located at its upper level, is characterized by generous grass stairs, hedges and ornamental flower beds. The once steep slope has been transformed into a welcoming space for picnics, sunbathing or just enjoying the view over the lower park. Minimalistic, simple, but clearly recognizable are the concrete strips that form the terraces in the lawn. Dancing trees from within the park cross the bridge and connect the small tip of the island with the main park, while boardwalks lead to riparian zones on either side of the island.
