Kienberg Hill, the heart of the garden festival IGA 2017, is located in the interface between two neighborhoods: a landscape park with a variety of exhibition gardens and a wetland zone along a small creek. Kienberg Hill, with its height of 102 meters, is the highest hill in Berlin and serves as a visual link between neighborhoods but one that nonetheless disconnects them physically. The proposed introduction of “the Belt”, a looped pathway around the foot of the hill, is a minimal intervention that connects the neighboring areas and allows each to be developed in a manner that respects its individuality, diversity and needs. An observation platform on top of Kienberg Hill allows visitors to enjoy the view during the garden festival and beyond.
